Normally for a low grade fever, they do exactly what these guys did: prescribe a heavy duty antibiotic. The problem is that Rose's GI tract has not recovered sufficiently from chemo to properly absorb some materials - like antibiotics. The proof of the theory is that they are supplementing magnesium and potassium difficiencies big time, nutrients that the GI tract would normally absorb.
So: she's in for five days so that she can receive these meds IV until she has fought off the infection and can adequately absorb stuff in a renewed GI tract. Capice?
